This antique brass bound Anglo-Burmese Mandalay chest dates to the 19th century and is decorated with brass inlaid wire work classically indicative of Burmese artistry. This piece is a fine example of an Anglo-Burmese military chest and the box maker has signed his name on the top; Boxmaker Sayaeain - Mandalay.
This style of Burmese teak chest is always etched with brass wire and is constructed from beautifully patinated teak wood with its original brass fittings and handles. The interior consists of one large space below a removable tray of carved compartments. Two candle boxes on either side allow for additional storage. Carved arches with small compartments surround a mirror that has been fitted into the inside of the lid.
Military chests were used by officers of the British Indian Army to carry their kit and personal possessions whilst on tour, they were made to order and had to withstand a lot of punishment in transit.
